Monopoly friendly: be free

Google, Skype, Firefox, Kazaa and others have introduced a new way of selling technology: giving it away.

The competition may try to make a better product at a lower price, but if the lowest price is free… Don’t wait!  Do it before a competitor adopts this strategy.

This business model is subversive and is totally destabilizing the system.  It’s making a big impression on consumers who can research, read the news, make phones calls, and listen to music for free (1).

In following this motto, the young emperor Gates launched numerous battles around the world: mobile telephones, game consoles … he managed to push back the frontiers of the empire to protect the heart of the system.

Programmers, lawyers, lobbies – Bill financed the best and didn’t pay attention to the cost. The very idea of taking on his armies discouraged even the noblest of us. Surrender or die; for many, rage turned into allegiance.

But today Rome is under siege.  Barbarians are at the gate: viral attacks, browser wars, desktop wars.  Will we see the fall of the empire?

In every society, the fight for control over the media is a significant power struggle. In our information age, it is even more so.

We are living in a time of historical upheaval. The war in Iraq and the American elections are not only a demonstration of the absurd but the announcement of a need for change. This change is desired, necessary and written in the wall.

Like many of you, I inform myself with Google News, blogs and books. This means we are living on the fringes of the media. However, if this behavior is significant (1), it’s not enough to completely overhaul the system.

We can notice that the proliferation of information sources (2) makes centralized control impossible. The written word is in many ways liberated.

Blogs as a business?

In the last months I am increasingly reading all type of news and watching conferences and seminars where people are predicting that blogs will be a big source of business. A known lecturer said last week in Bilbao that blogs are great for companies because "they are a source of innovation". It does not sound like a main reason!

Besides MS and Macromedia, there are not so many companies using blogs and in no case they are using them to bring money. They sound more like a new intranet/extranet tool or, in the case of newspapers, as a new way to name editorials. I hope to be wrong, but there is a feeling inside me that blogs have become a new source of business for traditional gourous, lecturers and people who live out of conferencing. And that scares me...

Dear CEO Bloggers, our next meeting will take place as planned, thursday the 2nd. December in Paris at around 8 pm. This will be a great opportunity for us all to meet each other, please leave a comment to say if you'll be attending or not to help me organise the venue and cocktail asap.

I propose something : let’s try to make business connexions !

Please write who and where you are, what your company does, your ambitions, your key benefits, your markets, your expectations, the things you propose and the things you need. Then, may be some of us could “start a business conversation” and see how this blog would allow us to discover each other, in France and all over Europe (World?).
I’m sure that everybody here is convinced by the blog power, that’s why we have one.
So let’s use this tool for what it is: a media between people, worlds, companies, etc.
